I heard that they are difficult. Is this true? Are they like the qualifying exams in grad school? For example, is the probability exam and the financial math exam comparable to qualifying exams (e.g. needs months and months of study)?
Are the actuarial exams hard?

3@Larry: I'll wager it depends on (i) which actuarial exams; and (ii) where. The question, as it stands, is too vague. – 2010-11-30

0@Arturo: Maybe a general impression can be given nevertheless. – 2010-11-30

0@Yuval Filmus: Frankly, I doubt it. Back when I was an undergrad, there was an actuarial major; were the exams for the actuarial classes "actuarial exams"? There was also a professional examination to enter the National Association; and a separate one to be certified. Which one is the "Actuarial Exam"? Are the exams in Mexico comparable to the ones in France, to the ones in the US? – 2010-11-30

0@Arturo: almost surely the OP means the professional examination. But you are right, different countries will have different standards. – 2010-11-30

1@Willie Wong: And maybe even different states/provinces/cantons/régions/shires. Hence, my vote for labeling this question "ambiguous, vague, incomplete." The new comparison to "qualifying exams" is likewise vague: as has been noted many times, the expectations of qualifying exams varies greatly among institutions (even institutions in the same city!) And whether someone needs "months and months of study" is surely subjective. I voted to close on those grounds. – 2010-11-30

1And by the way "being hard" is very subjective. Even if you try to quantify it by saying how much time is necessary to study to get a certain percentile score, this depends very much on the person. – 2010-12-01

0@ZevChonoles What's the point of closing a question 15 months after it was asked? This question, over 15 months, did NOT solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion. It did solicit opinion, but not much. So, not only is there no reason to close it 15 months after it was asked, but the reason for closing is WRONG. Actuarial exams ARE difficult in general, but they are NOT difficult when compared to qualifying exams. – 2012-03-21

0@Grapth: My reasons are the same as the other 4 people who voted to close. I agree both with Pete's comment that the question is very subjective, and with Arturo's comment that it is incomplete due to the total lack of information about the OP's location. I saw that there were already 4 votes to close, and submitted a final one. Perhaps Arturo's suggestion of closing as "not a real question" due to incompleteness would be better. But regardless of whether it did or did not devolve into arguments or debate, this type of question is better suited somewhere other than a stackexchange site. – 2012-03-21
